Description1

Tsigai sheep, presumably of Asia Minor origin, came from the Balkan Peninsula to present-day Hungary at the end of the 18th century. The dairy Tsigai variety was bred in Bács-Kiskun County.

A hardy, tough and very good-foraging breed. Prolificacy is 1.4–1.7 and milk yield 100–200 kg per lactation. The breeding goal is to preserve and improve a robust constitution, hardiness, good maternal traits and milking ability under extensive conditions.

A breed of above-average size; the forehead and bridge of the nose are convex, the typical “Roman nose”, and the ears are large and drooping. Head and legs are black or brown; the oral mucosa and tongue are slate grey. Lambs are born black and their fleece usually turns white later; the white, crimped fleece is “flecked” in many animals and covers only the neck and body.
