Description1

A Spanish breed adapted to life in the Sierra de Segura and La Sagra and the highlands along the Segura River, from which it takes its name.

It derives from the Manchega lineage but was officially separated by the ministry in 1978; the name covers the white, rubisca and mora varieties.

Its prolificacy and fine meat earned a PGI in 2008, finally approved by the EU in 2013; Cordero Segureño applies only to purebred lambs raised in 144 municipalities of Granada, Murcia, Albacete, Jaén and Almería. In 2023 there were 149,731 lambs from 214 farmers, almost 90% in Granada, Jaén and Almería.
