Description1

The Yellow-headed Berke is an extensive breed kept in Transylvania, mainly in Covasna and Harghita counties, and also found in Hungary around Kecskemét. It belongs to the Tsigai breed group; the so-called bare-bellied (“csóréhasú”) variety is a separate type.

Prolificacy is 1.2–1.4 and milk yield 80–150 kg per lactation. The breeding goal is to preserve a robust constitution, hardiness, good maternal traits and milking ability under extensive conditions.

A medium-sized sheep with large, dark and very lively eyes. Head and legs are yellowish-brown or light brown, the hooves grey, the oral mucosa and tongue slate grey. The fleece is white and crimped, sometimes with yellowish-brown flecks; it covers the head (except the face), neck and body and may extend to the underside, though the belly can also be bare.
