Sheep breed
Blanc du Massif Central
Blanc du Massif Central
A French white meat breed: non-seasonal breeding, 1.4–1.6 prolificacy and good grazing ability.
Description1
A single-purpose white meat breed that grazes well. It breeds out of season, so ewes can lamb outside the usual season; it has good maternal traits, good milk and a prolificacy of 1.4–1.6.
Ewe lambs can be bred at 10–12 months, which with proper feeding does not reduce lifetime performance. It has good conformation and high daily gain in lambs; ewes weigh 60–80 kg and rams 90–140 kg.
A large breed with medium-fine bone, an elongated head and broad forehead; the nose is slightly convex, markedly so in rams, and the large ears are carried sideways. The neck is free of wrinkles, the back straight, the limbs well muscled and the legs medium-long and correctly set.
History1
Today
The breeding goal is to keep non-seasonality, excellent prolificacy and lamb rearing while maintaining and improving high growth rates.
